Oops. I meant to say "first". emoticon

Goddamn, what a shitty and predictable movie this was. They market this as "From Producer James Gunn, Visionary Director Behind Guardians of the Galaxy", which is a very confusing statement in itself because A.) Like the director of any Marvel movie, he's entirely replaceable, and B.) what do producers do even do? Especially for a small town turkey like this movie, which is anything but visionary?

So much like the origin story of Cl... Continue »

Trilogy means they're already anxious to milk the fans for all their money. I think ONE new movie ought to do it, but apparently not. David Gordon Green is making it, which has to be weird to do a Halloween trilogy and then an Exorcist trilogy?

At least Ellen Burstyn will be back, but she's getting up in age. Linda Blair seems like a must, but I haven't seen any confirmation on that.

Does the Exorcist need another movie? Were the prequels as bad as everyone says? Did anybody even watch that da... Continue »

I'm watching a Jekyll and Hyde plot on Dark Shadows set in a parallel universe (which is fairly fitting for a storyline about alternates), but when clean-shaven Cyrus transforms into the evil John Yaeger, he gains a mustache. When he reverts, the stache disappears.

I saw this in a Ferrigno Hulk movie too. Bixby had a full beard which disappeared when the hulk came out to play. That goddamn hulk doesn't believe in beards, and then the beard manifests back when he reverts to human form.

That's right, a new Leprechaun movie, directed by Steve Kostanski of Astron-6 fame, and director of The Void. Forget about that piece of shit Leprechaun: Origins, this is the true return of the series. Unfortunately, Warwick Davis chose not to return, but honestly, the new actor is as good of a replacement as they possibly could have had. While this is no spectacular achievement, it's great fun, and a return to form for the Leprechaun series. If you like the first three movies, then I see no rea... Continue »

The story of the greatest race horse of all time, whose records at the Belmont Stakes will probably never even get sniffed.
When most people think of race horses, the ones that come to mind are Man 'on War, Citation, Seattle Slew, and Barbaro (who never got to prove his greatness).
But at the top of the heap is Secretariat. He won the 1973 Belmont Stakes by an astounding thirty-one lengths, and also has the twelve furlong track record by an equally astounding ten seconds. Neither will fall, EVER... Continue »

Based on a novel by writer/director John Russo, Midnight is a grainy forgotten nightmare about a runaway who gets herself in deep with a family of satanists. Sounds pretty cool, right? Well, it isn't that great, but it has enough charm to keep me satisfied.

The prologue establishes our villainous family with a young girl caught in a bear trap. They claim her to be a demon taking the appearance of an innocent girl, much in the vein of Bill Paxton's "Frailty", but they don't keep this theme going... Continue »

I'm watching The Untouchables and it's great. There's that whole bit with the baby carriage falling down the stairs, the camera angles, the pacing, etc. He always has that one long tense scene in his movies and nobody does that anymore. Where's our new Hitchcock? Where are our masters of suspense?

Of course, I'm referring to a select output of his filmography. I think I quit after Carlito's Way, his last great movie, cuz Mission Impossible and Black Dalia sucked. I still think he's essential to... Continue »

Oh my... this one was laughably bad. My buddy was ecstatic to show me just about any VHS he had on his 6" TV/VCR combo, so we went with this. The first two movies were all right on account of Terry O'Quinn playing the titular psycho character, but this one doesn't have him. Instead, this one has some other guy who gets plastic surgery to justify the recasting, and that's the only good/gross part of this movie. The rest had me turn into one of those rifftrax assholes who makes fun of the movie th... Continue »

This is something I've been trying to figure out for many years. I think I posted this on the old Horror board on IMDb once too, but never got an answer. Back in 1978 or possibly earlier (No later as I know it was before The Dain Curse and Salem's Lot), I saw part of a TV movie or possibly an episode of some show where a woman was groping around inside a dark house at night, presumably where she was not supposed to be because she had to get out fast when a car pulled into the driveway. She dr... Continue »

Roger Corman gives us this high school comedy about students just trying to rock when the new principal is a tight ass who hates anything with a beat. Naturally, she has to hate The Ramones!

If you didn't already know it, The Ramones are great. Apparently, they weren't the first choice for the band in this movie though. They wanted Todd Rundgren, Cheap Trick, Devo, Van Halen.. fuck it. Let's just use The Ramones!

So our main character is P.J. Soles and she's pretty hot in this movie. She's a R... Continue »

Since everyone has been waiting for this movie for so long... and I say that with some sarcasm and some legitimacy... I just watched it. Alex and Keanu have been trying to make a sequel for years, and for some reason, it took 'em a quarter of a century, but it somehow ended up alright.

So Bill and Ted have fallen flat and aren't the bigshots they hope to be. They're still married to their former princesses, but their relationships are somewhat stagnant. They also have daughters who are super ho... Continue »

Yeah, that's coming out. They sure do love shitting on Romero's immortal classic due to its public domain status, releasing a bunch of awful spin-offs that no one will remember. This one happens to feature our protagonist actors from Day of the Dead, which also had its fair share of shitty "sequels". Anywho, we have...

I mostly hate the films of Ray Dennis Steckler. Especially the ones he made in the 60's, which has always been considered his hey day. Wacky, silly, somewhat fast-paced, yet uninteresting films like The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living And Became Mixed Up Zombies, as well as the nearly unwatchable Rat Pfink A(nd) Boo Boo. Movies which were obviously made by someone who loved what he wa... Continue »

When it comes to slashers, the tail end of the 80s almost became a caricature of itself, but that doesn't make these movies any less fun. Anchor Bay discs were pure gold to horror fans, and Cheerleader Camp is one of those titles I was perfectly happy blind-buying because of this.

Who doesn't like cheerleaders? Who doesn't like camp slashers? Who wouldn't want to watch these two glorious things mingle? The ladies here are fine as fuck and the vibes are just right.

Betsy Russell plays our lead... Continue »

At least he got through last year, right? Dude was pretty fuckin' old, but I'd heard news even recently that he was still interested in doing Lethal Weapon 5. Of course, that could have been dementia talking for all we know, just to make us LW fans aroused, but whatever. The point is that he was active for a while and kept the dream of directing alive, because a good filmmaker doesn't let age stop him from having a vision.

I could care less about the Superman movies. DC isn't exactly my cup of... Continue »

Why? Because it's the 4th of July, and John Connor is going to get murdered by the T-850 on July 4th, 2032, so it's barely relevant!

T2 left a big set of shoes to fill, and it took 12 years before they shat out another movie, so it had to be good, right? Well, sorta.

Since James Cameron and Linda Hamilton refused involvement (and Eddie Furlong was a junkie at the time), this one relies solely on Arnold's star power, which is enough to make it a passable entry. Surely, without our epic cast an... Continue »

WTF is a ghoulie? Well, they're small demons that are summoned out of a toilet, obviously. Going to college is the third venture of these hooligan gremlin rip-offs. I saw this entry before I saw the others, and what is there to say about the others?

All I can remember about the first one is that I don't remember any of it. The 4th movie was made by Jim Wynorski, who has a tendency to make sequels to films he hasn't seen, so his movie retains little to none of the lore, so where does that leave... Continue »

Five men end up trapped in an office building basement and tell spooky stories.
1) A man has a recurring dream about finding his sister, who turns out not to be human.
2) A neat-freak pushes his wife just a bit too far.
3) A magician tries to steal a trick, but ends up paying for it.
4) A man tries to commit insurance fraud.
5) An artist infuses his paintings with a touch of voodoo.

Very effectively done anthology. Usually there is one story that is a weak link, but these are all really well do... Continue »

It took a while for me to warm up to this one, but it's a pretty solid movie overall. Part of me was reluctant to like it because it's a movie about a fucking killer car. A dumb premise can work in the right hands though, and John Carpenter was at his best in the 80s.

I guess it does have some Stephen King vibes, but it always seemed more like a Carpenter movie than a King movie to me. The soundtrack helps, which always reminded me of Halloween III (same era), and it's got that classic Albertus... Continue »

Two men assume their month-long duties to tend a lighthouse, but madness starts to set in.
Shooting in B&W worked great for this film, not only for the time period it took place in, but with the overall feel of the film. Same with the aspect ratio. Seeing as how there were only (for 99% of the film) two characters, it made it feel more personal.
Not positive exactly what the film was about. It was either Ephraim going insane, Ephraim already insane, or we were seeing two different sides of t... Continue »

A man returns to LA in hopes of rekindling a romance with his ex-wife, but ends up getting mixed up in an attempt to hijack an armored truck.
This is one of the few movies I've seen that fall into the film-noir category. It's also one of the few Burt Lancaster movies I've seen.
There was a lot going on in this film. Tragic romances, double-crosses, double-double crosses, gunfights, fistfight.
This was a really well put together film. The acting was above par (with one brief scene excluded), sets... Continue »

If you've seen any other Saw movie, you know what to expect here. Yeah, they're trying to pretend it's not really a sequel, but a spinoff, but who are we kidding here? Okay, so it's a copycat killer who has no real connection to John Kramer, but so what? It's still the same old shit. This is as much a sequel to Saw as "A New Beginning" is a sequel to Friday the 13th.

The fact that it stars Chris Rock is something interesting, I guess. He's actually not such a bad actor in a serious roll, but I... Continue »

During WWI, two British soldiers are tasked with a mission to stop an ill-fated attack on a German fortified position.
I'm ashamed to admit that I don't really know that much about WWI, aside from the basic facts, such as cause, combatants and the immediate outcome and how the terms basically made WWII inevitable.
The movie itself is gritty and action-packed, with an occasion lull to let the viewers catch their breath before things blow up again (sometimes literally).
The British accent and sl... Continue »
