Anything come to mind? The Vanishing doesn't exactly fit in here, but, well, sort of... some scenes fit.

I'm just trying to think of some good horror or thriller movies to watch that take place in a lonely western highway setting. Horror, ideally.

Joy Ride is sort of a guilty pleasure for me, I guess. I know it's not THAT great, but it surprised me the first time I saw it, that it was better than I expected, and I still like it.

Anyway, anything leap to mind?

This has some good ideas. I can't believe I forgot Duel and Race with the Devil. https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieSuggestions/comments/v598w/movies_like_the_hitcher/

Thanks, that does look good. I always liked Roy Scheider. I was sad when he died. He just had sort of a sad, thoughtful face. He seemed like a good guy.

All of the Phantasm sequels that I can think of are in this same vein, by the way. Not the first one, but the sequels have sort of a western road movie vibe going on.

The super-helicopter movie? I don't think I have seen that, sadly. I remember it though, because there used to be previews for it included on old VHS tapes I used to rent, QUITE awhile back.

Monster Man (2003), (just for the sake of completeness).
Route 666 (2001)(same)
The Forsaken (2001)(same)(it's totally retarded, but it qualifies as western road horror).

It is QUITE lame. I would even go so far as to call it "wicked retarded"... just a Massachusetts expression. Retarded is pronounced "re-TAH-ded." It has a scene with a cute topless girl right at the beginning, but it's pretty much all downhill after that (except for a few seconds later on when she's in a tub, God bless her).

This thread somehow reminded me of the video to the Kansas song Fight Fire with Fire. It isn't really a highway-related video, but it has some southwest imagery in it, and some horror-ish moments. Look at the scene where the gigantic mosquito has the dude pinned down, at 2:55-3:02. Yeesh. youtube

I'm kidding here, but Twister came to mind too. It actually sort of fits the description, technically, just because it has some scares and is mostly a road movie. I probably thought of it because of the Bill Paxton connection with Near Dark.
