Though he's a douche like Clooney for mixing his stardom with politics, there's no doubt he's one of the greatest actors of the past 30 years...thinking to myself I've come up with my favorite parts he's had, I've come up with this top 10 IMO.
Carlito's Way
At Close Range
Bad Boys
State of Grace
The Thin Red Line
U-Turn
The Falcon and the Snowman
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Colors
The Game

Any thoughts?

I don't agree with a lot of his personal life but there is no doubting his powerhouse acting. He really is capable of some intensely moving work

My favorites. In order:

Dead Man Walking
I Am Sam
The Assassination of Richard Nixon
Mystic River
The Tree of Life
Milk
Hurlyburly
Carlito's Way
21 Grams

Also he directed Into the Wild!! What a brilliant film that is!

Into the Wild was a pretty great bio-pic.

It was. I read the book too, and it was excellent. Penn did a first class job with it.

I've not seen enough Sean Penn movies to have a top 10, so instead I'll rank what I've seen.

Bad Boys
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Mystic River
Carlito's Way
Colors
Casualties of War
Milk

Bad Boys and Fast Times were easy choices. I love those two movies.

And yeah, he's definitely like Clooney when it comes to his attitude. I don't think I've seen a Clooney movie I thought was great though.

It's hard to leave out Spicoli! I really like his earlier work in the 80's and 90's more than post 2000. Should definitely check out At Close Range, his performance opposite Christopher Walken is great plus his brother Chris Penn plays his brother in the film.

If it's on Kodi, I'll watch it tonight. Hope it is since Netflix doesn't offer it to stream or rent. In the mood for a Sean Penn movie now.

IMO any of those films on my list is worthy of watching, especially State of Grace, Falcon and the Snowman and U-Turn.

Just finished At Close Range. Loved it! I'll try to check out your other recs soon. I saw State of Grace has a double feature release with At Close Range. Only $8, wouldn't object to blind buying it if it's not available elsewhere.

State of Grace along with Millers Crossing basically went under the radar at the time of their releases due to they came out at about the same time as Goodfellas. State of Grace deals more with the Irish Westies mob of NYC but Penns performance opposite Gary Oldman is another great one. In fact Oldman actually outshines Penn in this one IMO. Definitely worth 8 bucks for the twinbill.

Love Carlito's Way, The Thin Red Line, U-Turn, Fast Times at Ridgemont High and The Game. Not sure I've seen the others. Quality actor but yeah, I do wish he'd shut the fuck up about his politics. I waver between centre left liberal and libertarian left myself so I sympathise a little with him, but he has a way of saying stuff that's just dumb and reflects badly on everyone that might be on his side.

I thought he was funny in Fast Times when I was a kid. Now, he just seems like a self important cunt who probably thinks people are too stupid to see through his philanthropy.

I can't argue with anything you said there which is why I started my post off the way I did. I hate when celebrities use their status to promote their political agendas whether left nor right. Keep your political views to yourself and do your job....act!

Yeah. The political thing is getting ridiculous, too. He's an actor in Hollywood. He's won oscars. We know where the fuck he stands, politically. Same side as the rest of the elites.

If and when you get the chance watch the films in my list up above, they're underrated films from his younger days in the 80-90's. They don't disappoint IMO.

Good actor, but like most have mentioned, he's a self-righteous douchebag. Jeff Spicoli is easily his best and most iconic role IMO. A slacker for the ages!

I can't think of anything I've seen him in that I didn't like! I might add Mystic River to your list, although I'm not sure if I liked that movie more because of his contributions, or more because of the whole cast. Also, The Falcon and the Snowman is a real classic. I don't think people really remember it as much as they should. Then again, what the hell do I know, I spend all my free time here... seriously, I hardly ever see it mentioned online, but it certainly could be, with all the foreign policy questions getting raised these days... it could be brought up as a source of serious conversation, or at least as something to make memes from.

PS I haven't even thought about State of Grace in quite awhile... I have no excuse for that. Great movie.
